‘I know this is not the position we want’ - Nwabali thanks Nigerians for their support during AFCON 2025
Nwabali was instrumental in Nigeria's 4-2 penalty shootout win following a goalless draw in regulation time.
The Chippa United shot-stopper became the hero of the shootout, denying both Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and Manchester City's Omar Marmoush from the spot.
His crucial saves secured the third-place finish for the Super Eagles and cemented his status as the game's standout player.
What Nwabali said
The shotstopper earned himself the Man of the Match award in Nigeria's bronze-medal victory against the Pharaohs.
After receiving the award, Nwabali acknowledged the passionate support from Nigerian fans, who stood by the team despite the disappointment of not reaching the final.
"First, I want to say a big thanks to my nation and a lot of our fans that came to support us today," he stated.
While proud of the achievement, Nwabali conceded that the team had higher aspirations for the tournament.
"I really appreciate my teammates. These guys deserve the best. I know this is not the position we want, but we will take it," he commented.
He also noted that the Super Eagles entered the competition with low expectations from outsiders and credited the coaching staff for their faith and leadership.
"Initially, we came to this tournament as underdogs. I want to say thank you to the management and the coaches," Nwabali concluded.
