Klopp, now out of coaching, is one of the greatest managers in Premier League history, winning everything possible with the Reds. However, his story could have gone through another route, as he was courted by the Red Devils.

What Klopp said

Manchester United have gone through a host of managers since Sir Alex Ferguson's exit. Interestingly, they were linked to and discussed with the two most successful managers in the Premier League since Sir Alex’s departure: Klopp and Pep Guardiola.

In a recent interview with British-Nigerian founder, investor and podcaster Steven Bartlett on the Diary of a CEO podcast, the German tactician revealed why he did not join Manchester United when they approached him.

The former Dortmund man explained that the project Manchester United presented to him was unappealing. He suggested that their proffer lacked a clear direction and structure, as it seemed they were only interested in signing big-name players.

"Because I was told things in the meetings that I didn't like: 'We get all the players you want... we get him, and him, and him...'"  And I was sitting there like... Yeah, this is not my type of project,” Klopps said.

"I didn't want to bring back Paul Pogba. These things won't work. I didn't want to bring back Cristiano Ronaldo; this won't help.

"Their idea was to bring the best players to the club, but they would never bring up football. And then a pure football project came along: Liverpool FC."

Klopp’s assessment of the Red Devils' lack of direction from that interview was the reality, as Manchester United’s transfer policy and activity have been cited as one of the major reasons for their failings.
