‘He will be very important’ - Ex-Super Eagles player unsurprised by Fernandez's seamless debut
Fernandez earned his first cap for Nigeria against Iran before marking his first start with a goal in a 2-2 draw with Jordan.
The 24-year-old, who moved from Peterborough United to Rangers last summer, has quickly become a key player, attracting interest from top European clubs.
After fulfilling his "childhood dream" of representing Nigeria, Fernandez shared his excitement on social media, posting: "Honoured and grateful to play for Nigeria... First start, first goal. Enjoyable experience."
Oshaniwa credits Scottish League for Fernandez's readiness
Oshaniwa, who was part of Nigeria's 2013 AFCON-winning squad and played at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, believes Fernandez is a perfect fit for Eric Chelle's squad.
The former Hearts full-back credits the competitive nature of Scottish football for preparing the defender for the international stage.
"It's clear Emmanuel Fernandez will be a valuable addition to the national team," Oshaniwa said, as quoted by the Glasgow Times. "His strong performance didn't surprise me because I know the Scottish league is very competitive."
He continued: "Playing in such an environment helped shape Fernandez into a player capable of handling international football.
“Being exposed to a physically demanding and tactically disciplined league makes him well-suited to the challenges of the Super Eagles set-up. He will be very important for the team."
Oshaniwa concluded by noting that integrating new talent is crucial for the team's development. "We are still a work in progress, and integrating new players like Fernandez is part of that process, bringing fresh energy and competition into the squad," he added.
