He helped me massively — Al Kholood boss hails ex-Super Eagles captain Troost-Ekong
Troost-Ekong joined the Saudi outfit from PAOK in the summer of 2024 and played a pivotal role in stabilising the club’s defence.
However, after a successful stint where he helped the team maintain their Saudi Pro League status, the veteran centre-back secured a fresh challenge in the January window.
Al Kholood boss thanks 'irreplaceable' Troost-Ekong
Speaking to reporters at a press conference, Buckingham was clear that while a new signing will occupy Troost-Ekong's spot in the lineup, his leadership qualities are one-of-a-kind.
“You can’t replace William, and I am not looking to replace William as a player or a person. There will be somebody who comes in to replace him as a player,” Buckingham admitted.
“What I mean is, William is by far the best leader of people that I ever had the pleasure of working with at this football club.”
The manager credited the former Watford and Udinese man for being instrumental in his own transition to the club.
Troost-Ekong acted as a bridge between the coaching staff and the squad, helping to shape the very environment that allowed Al-Kholood to thrive.
“He has been a really big part of helping me settle at the club and also making sure the things I have just spoken about with the culture, the environment,” Buckingham added.
“He has helped lead and bring the players along that journey. I don’t think we could replace William.”
The exit of the Super Eagles icon leaves a massive leadership vacuum in the Saudi side, with Buckingham acknowledging that Troost-Ekong’s impact will be felt far beyond the touchline for the remainder of the season.
