Harambee Stars Goalkeeper Reveals Ambition to Play Out of Africa
Harambee Stars first-choice goalkeeper Byrne Omondi may have earned a big move ahead of this season but that is not the end of his ambitions.
Omondi is among players who impressed during the 2024 African Nations Championships and secured a transfer to record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia alongside national team teammates Michael Kibwage, Siraj Mohammed and Lewis Bandi.
The goalkeeper had spent a couple of seasons at Bandari where he had enjoyed great playing time and could not pass on a move to the country’s top team when the interest became apparent.

Now, while he is looking to help Gor Mahia regain their title-winning touch, Omondi also has a burning desire to play outside the African continent.
“My dream remains to play outside Africa,” Omondi told Telecomasia regarding his ambitions beyond Gor Mahia.
What is Giving Byrne Omondi Hope of Overseas Move?
“The good thing about being a goalkeeper is that we can play well into advanced ages. I am 28 at the moment and I know I still have many years left in me. I want to achieve that dream and I will work hard, push myself to make it a reality.”
While he is thinking into the future, he is mindful of the present which involves his duties with 21-time Kenyan champions Gor Mahia as well as fending off competition for his spot in the national team.
“With Gor Mahia, my ambition is simple; to win the Premier League title this season. I believe that we have a good team and if we fight together, we will achieve that,” he added.
“In the national team, I hope to keep cementing my place. This requires constant work because there is very huge and healthy competition. You cannot afford to let your guard down.”
The former KCB and Tusker FC goalkeeper is also keeping hope alive that he will still be Kenya’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations which they will co-host with neighbours Tanzania and Uganda.
