Augustine Eguavoen, who had been serving as interim manager, was replaced by Chelle at the beginning of the year, as announced by the Nigeria Football Federation.
Chelle’s appointment came as a controversy, with fans not pleased with the NFF’s choice of coach for the team.
However, his performance in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March will be the ultimate test.

The Franco-German tactician was Nigeria’s coach for over five years and understands how football operates in the country.
He joined Benin after the NFF sacked him two years ago and has done well, even defeating Nigeria with his Benin team.
Eric Chelle has been tasked with the difficult job of leading Nigeria through the World Cup Qualifiers.
It will be a challenge, as Nigeria is currently second from bottom in their group, with only three points from four games.
