Finally! Lionel Messi reveals plans for 2026 World Cup

Lionel Messi has expressed his desire to compete at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting that his participation ultimately hinges on his physical condition over the next year.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, who famously captained Argentina to victory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, remains hopeful of defending their title when the tournament is hosted across North America next summer.

At 39, it would mark his sixth World Cup appearance.

Speaking to NBC News’ Tom Llamas, Messi confirmed he hasn't ruled out the possibility but emphasized a pragmatic approach to his fitness assessment.

“It’s something extraordinary to be able to play in a World Cup, and I would love to," Messi said.

He clarified the conditions for his potential involvement, saying "I would like to be there, to be well and be an important part of helping my national team. I’m going to assess that on a day-to-day basis when I start preseason next year with Inter Miami and see if I can really be 100%, if I can be useful to the group.”

Messi, who has tallied 114 goals in 195 international appearances, acknowledged the factor of age but still described the chance to defend Argentina’s crown as “spectacular.”

The former Barcelona star remains one of the game's biggest names, and his presence at any World Cup surely enhances the appeal from a sporting and commercial standpoint.
