Manchester United have been encouraged to consider a move for Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi as they look to strengthen their midfield options.
Transfer developments and comments from a former Red Devils defender have added fresh momentum to the idea of Ndidi returning to the Premier League.
Ndidi offered to United as January opportunity
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Wilfred Ndidi has been proposed to Manchester United as a potential midfield reinforcement for the January window.
The Nigerian international, who joined Besiktas last summer after eight years with Leicester City, is said to be keen on a swift return to English football following his strong showing at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Since arriving in Turkey, Ndidi has featured in 14 league matches for Besiktas and scored once, quickly establishing himself as a key figure. Romano revealed on his YouTube channel: “One player that is offered to Manchester United is Wilfred Ndidi.
The former Leicester City midfielder, who is now playing in Turkey, is being offered as an opportunity for this January transfer window for their midfield.”
He added that while Ndidi is eager to make the move and is ready to agree to terms, United are yet to make any formal approach.
Phil Jones urges United to target a defensive midfielder
Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones has also weighed in, effectively pushing the club toward signing a player of Ndidi’s profile. Jones believes United will need a defensive-minded midfielder, especially with Casemiro expected to leave at the end of the season.
Speaking about the squad, Jones said: “I think if Bruno Fernandes is going to play in a higher position and Kobbie is going to play in that six position and Casemiro now announcing he’s leaving at the end of the season, I think that’ll be a position they will potentially look to dip into the market.”
He added that United need “a six, somebody who can build but also be that destroyer in there as well and also somebody who can get about the pitch.”
With Ndidi’s reputation as a ball-winner and defensive anchor, his profile appears to match exactly what Jones believes United will soon be searching for, making the Super Eagles captain a logical candidate as transfer discussions continue.
