Firms Selected for the Strategic Roads Project

According to a report by Business Daily, the contract was awarded to China Road and Bridge Corporation, China WU Yi Co Ltd, and Gaps Construction and Engineering Co. Limited of Kenya.

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) selected the companies through the Specially Permitted Procurement Procedure (SPPP), a fast-track procurement model that allows urgent, high-value projects to bypass standard public tender processes.

In letters sent on January 9, 2026, KURA informed the three firms that the project would take 12 months to complete, followed by a 12-month defects notification period.

In its correspondence with China Road and Bridge Corporation, KURA stated that the firm had been identified as one of the qualified and approved contractors capable of undertaking the strategic infrastructure project.

Scope of Work Around Talanta Sports City

The roads project will include walkways on both sides of Ngong Road, a dual carriageway linking Ngong Road to Cemetery Road, and a bridge at the Southern Bypass interchange, as well as another bridge across Ngong Road.

It will also cover a single carriageway and walkways from the VIP access side of Talanta Sports Complex to the Kenya Scouts Association, along with additional single carriageways with walkways along Cemetery Road.

The upgrades are aimed at easing traffic congestion, enhancing pedestrian safety, and accommodating the expected surge in fans and visitors during AFCON 2027.

Chinese Firms' Dominance in Kenyan Infrastructure

The awarding of the contract highlights the continued dominance of Chinese construction firms in Kenya’s transport sector.

China Road and Bridge Corporation has previously completed major projects, including the Mombasa–Nairobi–Naivasha Standard Gauge Railway, the Nairobi Expressway, and the Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit dual highway.

China WU Yi Co Ltd has delivered projects such as the Bomas International Convention Centre and was part of the consortium that constructed the Thika Superhighway.

While foreign firms have led large-scale infrastructure projects, local contractors have largely been confined to smaller developments, sparking debates over domestic participation in high-value projects.

Talanta Sports City Stadium and AFCON 2027

The Sh44.79 billion Talanta Sports City Stadium is one of three Kenyan venues set to host AFCON matches, alongside Moi International Sports Centre in Mombasa and Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

With the stadium nearing completion, there is added pressure on the three firms to finish the surrounding road networks, bridges, and walkways in time to host international teams and fans.

The Talanta Sports roads project forms part of Kenya’s broader infrastructure push ahead of AFCON 2027, ensuring smooth urban mobility and a world-class experience for visitors.
