Real Madrid’s title charge has suffered a setback after Kylian Mbappé was ruled out of Sunday’s LaLiga clash against Real Betis.

The French forward’s injury comes at a delicate moment in the season, with Madrid already battling a dip in form and mounting pressure in the title race.

Mbappé sidelined as Alonso sweats on Super Cup return

Head coach Xabi Alonso confirmed that Mbappé will miss the Betis encounter due to a sprained left knee, although the club remains hopeful he could return in time for next week’s Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Atlético Madrid.

The 27-year-old had been in outstanding form before the injury, recently equalling Cristiano Ronaldo’s club record of 59 goals in a calendar year following his strike in the 2-0 win over Sevilla on December 20.

“We’ll definitely miss Kylian,” Alonso told reporters. “We have to have a lot of faith in those who are going to play tomorrow.”

The Madrid boss admitted the club is racing against time to get his star forward fit again. “We have to wait and see how things develop, and we’ll do everything we can to get him back as soon as possible,” Alonso said. “We’re going to be pushing the deadlines… The Super Cup? We hope.”

Mbappé’s absence adds to Madrid’s concerns after a wobble in league form. Once five points clear at the top, Los Blancos drew three straight league games before suffering a surprise home defeat to Celta Vigo in December, allowing Barcelona to move four points clear in the title race.

Vinicius struggles add to Madrid worries

Madrid’s recent struggles have also coincided with a worrying dip in form for Vinicius Junior. The Brazilian winger, who scored 22 goals last season, has managed just five goals in all competitions this term and has not found the net since October.

Vinicius was even booed by sections of the Bernabéu crowd during the Sevilla match, but Alonso was keen to play down any concerns over his confidence. “Vini looks fine to me, cheerful and smiling,” he said. “The break has been good for all of us to recharge our batteries.”

With Mbappé sidelined and Vinicius searching for form, Alonso challenged his squad to rediscover their energy. “Tomorrow, we are the ones who have to give in order to receive, to spread that enthusiasm and rhythm that we need,” he added.

As Madrid attempt to steady their season, the coming fixtures could prove decisive in determining whether their title ambitions remain alive.
