Besiktas consider sacking Manchester United legend after just months in charge
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s time in Türkiye with Besiktas may be running out much quicker than expected.
After a shocking 4–2 home defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Europa League qualifiers, pressure is mounting on the former Manchester United striker, just months after he was appointed as Besiktas manager in January 2025.
Solskjaer on thin ice after Europa League disaster
Besiktas’ loss to Shakhtar did more than hurt their qualification hopes, it has triggered a wave of criticism from fans and insiders alike.
The team’s flat performance at home has raised serious doubts about Solskjaer’s tactical setup, in-game management, and overall control of the dressing room.
Sozcu reports that sections of the club’s leadership are already pushing for his dismissal, frustrated by the lack of visible progress under his leadership.
With the second leg just around the corner, Solskjaer is walking a very fine line. Another bad result could force the board’s hand, especially with fans already losing patience.
Club president Serdal Adali is said to be actively reviewing alternatives, especially given how early in the season this crisis has come.
Nuri Sahin and Sergen Yalcin in the frame
Former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Nuri Sahin has emerged as a leading candidate to replace Solskjaer.
The 36-year-old is reportedly admired by key board members and could even be handed responsibilities beyond coaching, including transfer oversight. This in itself is seen as a sign of the club’s desire to shift away from the Solskjaer project entirely.
Sergen Yalcin, who previously led Besiktas to domestic success, is another name being considered.
His deep connection to the club and prior experience managing in Istanbul make him a strong fallback option. Whatever happens next, Solskjaer’s grip on the job is now visibly weakening.
