Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has called on Manchester United's wing-backs to improve their attacking output, using former Chelsea star Victor Moses as a prime example of what is required.

Murphy pointed to the successful Chelsea side that won the Premier League with a 3-4-3 formation, a system similar to one used by United.

He highlighted how wing-backs Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses were crucial to that success, regularly contributing goals and assists by getting into the opposition's box.

This season, Manchester United have deployed players like Diogo Dalot, Amad Diallo, and Patrick Dorgu in the wing-back roles. Despite a recent upturn in form for the team, Murphy believes there is significant room for improvement in these positions.

What Murphy said

The trio of Dalot, Diallo, and Dorgu have managed just three assists and no goals between them so far this campaign, a statistic Murphy finds lacking.

"I still think they could get a bit more from their wing-backs. When I think of teams who have played that system and been really successful, wing-backs have done really well," Murphy told talkSPORT.

He elaborated on his comparison, stating, "When Chelsea won the league playing that 3-4-3, they had Alonso and Moses both chipping in with goals and assists regularly."

While acknowledging the talent of some of the current players, Murphy questioned their suitability for the role. "I like Dalot, he’s a talent, but is he really a wing-back? He’s a right-footer playing at left wing-back."

Ultimately, Murphy stressed that the key to improvement lies in the end product.

"Goals and assists. If you’re playing wing-back, you are getting in great areas, you really are. I’m not talking double figures but they need to chip in," he concluded.
