Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says Gabriel Jesus is finally closing in on a long-awaited return, just in time for a high-stakes London derby against Chelsea.
With momentum restored after key wins over Tottenham and Bayern Munich, Arteta insists his side is fully focused and highly motivated ahead of Sunday’s clash.
Jesus nearing comeback after 11-month injury layoff
Arteta confirmed that Jesus is in the final stages of recovery after being sidelined for nearly a year with a cruciate ligament injury suffered in early January 2025.
The Brazilian forward has already featured in a behind-closed-doors friendly as the medical staff monitor how his body responds to increased workload.
“We have to take into account that he’s been out for 11 months, and consistency is important. We need to see how his body reacts and what else he needs,” Arteta explained, noting that the squad currently has “the right balance” as Jesus works his way back.
The 28-year-old registered seven goals and two assists in 27 appearances last season, and his return adds valuable depth to Arsenal’s attack as the fixtures intensify.
Arteta’s Arsenal ‘extremely motivated’ for crucial derby
With Chelsea arriving in fine form, Arteta stressed the importance of maintaining focus after a strong week of results.
“After beating Tottenham at home, we managed to assert ourselves again against Bayern… now we need to focus on the next match,” he said.
The Spaniard added that nothing changes in terms of mentality, calling Sunday’s showdown “a big match, a London derby, against a strong opponent in excellent form.”
The game takes place on Sunday, 30 November, at 17:30 WAT, and Arsenal believe they are “fully prepared” for the challenge, with Jesus’ imminent return offering an extra lift at just the right moment.
