Arsenal’s defensive renaissance has caught the eye of one of the Premier League’s greatest ever goalkeepers, with Petr Cech weighing in on whether the Gunners can break Chelsea’s iconic record of conceding fewer than 15 goals in a season.

Speaking to former teammate John Terry, Cech praised Arsenal’s blistering start but warned that maintaining such defensive excellence across 38 games remains a massive challenge.

Asked by Terry if Arsenal could eclipse Jose Mourinho’s 2004/05 Chelsea side, who set the gold standard with just 15 goals conceded, Cech offered admiration and realism in equal measure.

“Well, you know, they [Arsenal] are doing really well, I have to say. It’s early in the season, but you have to start somewhere,” he said.

Cech acknowledged Arsenal’s resilience under Mikel Arteta, noting that if they “carry on like that, then they have a chance,” but he stressed how difficult it is to stay airtight all year. “38 games, you need to have a little bit of luck sometimes,” he added

“I think it will be hard for them to break our record, but I will be following because they started well,” the ex-Czech international concluded.

Arsenal have conceded just three goals in nine games, a pace that would see them finish with just 12–13 goals conceded, comfortably inside Chelsea’s historic benchmark. It’s a testament to disciplined structure, aggressive pressing, and standout performers like Gabriel, Saliba, and Raya.

A legendary voice speaks from experience

Cech’s opinion carries heavyweight credibility. He was the brick wall behind Mourinho’s record-setting defence and finished his Chelsea career with four Premier League titles and three Golden Gloves before securing another Golden Glove at Arsenal.

If anyone understands the stamina, concentration, and consistency required to sustain elite-level defending from August to May, it’s him.

While Arsenal fans will dream of rewriting Premier League history, even Cech’s measured endorsement is a mark of how far they’ve come.

Now the question is whether Arteta’s men can stay relentless and lucky enough to chase down a record that has stood untouched for nearly two decades.
