Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Alloy Agu, says Nigeria’s dream of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is still very much alive despite the team’s shaky start in the Group C campaign.

Speaking exclusively to Complete Sports ahead of Saturday’s clash against Rwanda in Uyo, the 58-year-old maintained that “impossible does not exist” in football, urging the players, coaches, and authorities to rally together.

What Agu said

Agu, who represented Nigeria at the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations and featured in the country’s golden era of the 1990s, pointed to football’s unpredictability as a reason to remain hopeful.

“Impossible does not exist in the lexicon of the round leather game,” Agu said.

“We saw the Liverpool vs Arsenal match on Sunday. It looked like it would end goalless, but the result changed in the final minutes. Anything can still happen in this group," he added.

The former Nigeria goalkeeping coach stressed that unity across all levels is key if the Super Eagles are to book a seventh World Cup appearance, following their past outings in 1994, 1998, 2002, 2010, 2014, and 2018.

“It all has to do with everyone, the players, the coaches, the NFF, even state governments. They need to come around the team and give the right support so the Eagles can go all the way,” Agu added.

Agu said the turning point must begin this weekend in Uyo against Rwanda before the away fixture against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in Bloemfontein on Tuesday.

He added, “A win against Rwanda is crucial. From there, we can build momentum into the South Africa game. With the talents Nigeria has, it’s not impossible to make it to the World Cup.”
