2026 HSBC SVNS2: Shujaa Boss it at Home as Kenya Lionesses Endure Mixed Fortunes
Kenya Sevens maintained their perfect run at the 2026 HSBC SVNS2 tournament in Nairobi following a second straight big win at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.
Having thrashed Canada 29-12 in their opening match in the morning, Shujaa took it a notch higher as they moved top of the table following a 33-0 demotion of Belgium in the afternoon.
Kenya took little time to make their presence felt as the gulf in class was evident from a Shujaa team that was forced out of the top flight against a Belgian side that was recently promoted from the third tier.
Samuel Asati touched down for Kenya’s first try after breaking from the scrum and it was converted for 7-0 before Chrisant Ojwang had the second a with great sprint from Shujaa’s 22-yard box to touch down at the other end, the try converted for 14-0 in favour of Kevin Wambua’s men.
With Belgium threatening to break free, Kenya were vigilant and stopped them in their tracks in their own area, Asati getting possession of the ball before quickly passing to Vincent Onyala, who had the easy job of crossing the line nearby for 19-0.
Odongo Applies the Magic as Lionesses Stumble
It is never complete for Shujaa if Patrick Odongo does not add his magic and the Daystar Falcons star excited the crowd. Odongo showed his quality with a darting run in between his markers for Kenya’s fourth try which was also converted for 26-0 at halftime.
After the break, Shujaa slowed the tempo of the game and invited pressure although the Belgians did not benefit from it. As the clock was running down towards full-time, Floyd Wabwire got time and space on the ball and sprinted to the try line for his team’s fifth touch down.
It was well converted for 33-0 at full-time as Shujaa gave the fans full value for their money with a great display on the pitch.
Meanwhile, while Shujaa had a flawless run, the Kenya Lionesses had mixed fortunes as they started with a narrow 15-12 win over Brazil before losing 15-12 to China after fighting back from 15-0 down.
Both sides will be looking to complete the day with wins in their third match.
