National Youth Games: Bayelsa, Ogun dominates Wrestling

Bayelsa State and Ogun State dominated the wrestling event at the ongoing National Youth Games in Asaba as Ungokakpo Andrew and Obasanjo Okikijesu won medals.

In the 36kg Female Bayelsa's Ungokakpo Andrew beat Bibo Clara of Edo in the final to win gold while Kurakeme Iniepome of Imo carted and Victory Esther of Adamawa State bagged bronze medal.

Obasanjo Okikijesu upset form book to beat Bayelsa raised Boma Federation who represented Delta to win gold in the 44kg male.

Emmanuel Okike of Bayelsa and Mustapha Adamu of Bauchi won the bronze medal.

Bayelsa Wins 9 Gold battle for Supremacy

Team Bayelsa continued its impressive outing at the ongoing Youth Games, the state have recorded nine gold, four silver and six bronze medals as the push to dethrone Delta and Lagos State who are currently first and second gets intense after day five of the games.

A breakdown of the overall medals earned by team Bayelsa shows that the team won five gold medals in the Chess event, one gold medal in gymnastics, and one bronze medal in Scrabble, while Swimming awarded Bayelsa two silver and one bronze medal.

Darts brought Bayelsa its first gold medal in the boys 501 doubles over host Delta State in a closely contested game, while the girls settled for bronze.

Taekwondo and Para Athletics both earned medals for the squad, with Para Athletics taking silver and Taekwondo taking bronze.

Team Bayelsa's overall result after day five of the National Youth Games was completed with Kokowa's gold medal and Wrestling's gold medal and bronze medal.

Team Bayelsa's performance on Day 5 demonstrates that the state has already surpassed the 2021 total medal count of 16 Gold, 14 Silver, and 16 Bronze, with 18 Gold medals already in the bag as of the time of submitting this report.
