Why Nigerian star Iwobi was sad to see Ghana crash out of AFCON 2023

Nigerian playmaker Alex Iwobi sympathises with Ghana's AFCON woes, but Nigeria's Super Eagles remain his priority.

Nigerian playmaker Alex Iwobi has shared his thoughts on Ghana's disappointing first-round exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, expressing sympathy for their performance while maintaining his focus on Nigeria's success.

Pulse Sports Nigeria reports that the Super Eagles and the Black Stars shared the same team hotel during the tournament in Ivory Coast earlier this year.

Iwobi’s Respect for Ghanaian Talent

Nigeria’s Super Eagles made it through to the finals after a shaky start before losing to eventual champions Cote d’Ivoire, while Ghana suffered elimination at the group stage.

"It's a shame because the way they exited with the kind of players they have, was a bit sad to see," Iwobi said per Ghanaweb.

"Obviously, because we were in the same hotel with them we could see how devastated they were."

Despite the fierce rivalry between the two West African nations, Iwobi says he has respect for Ghana's players and was disappointed not to face them.

"There's a lot of vibe between us. I have a lot of people that I respect in Ghana so I would like them to do well," the Fulham man added.

"I have a lot of friends outside the team so it's like you want them to do well so you can play against them and prove a point in the competition."

Nigeria Remains Priority for Iwobi

However, Iwobi made it clear his main focus is always on the fortunes of his own country's national team.

"My main concern is always going to be about Nigeria. So as long as Nigeria is doing well, I'm not too really concerned about any other nation," he concluded.

Ghana's poor AFCON showing has heaped pressure on under-fire coach Chris Hughton, who has since been replaced by Addo Otto ahead of their bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Nigeria will themselves attempt to bounce back from their final disappointment by securing a place at the next AFCON in 2025.
