The forward is currently on loan from Burnley who were promoted back to the Premier League.

Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst is hopeful he has a future with the Red Devils beyond the end of the season after “positive talks with the club”.

The 30-year-old Dutchman is on loan from Burnley and has scored two goals in 27 appearances for United in all competitions.

Erik ten Hag, the United manager, suggested last month that the club would be open to keeping the striker beyond the end of his loan and Weghorst explained that talks with his representatives and the club have been positive.

“In those [talks] the club said they are very satisfied with me,” Weghorst said “It has absolutely not been communicated with me that Man United don’t want to continue with me,” he added.

“They appreciate my value. They believe I am absolutely an asset for the team. Of course I have heard different things [in the media]. I have to wait and see what happens and focus on our goals in the league and cup competitions.’”

The Netherlands international would also want reassurances over his role in the team going forward.

He signed for the club following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo before starting the following nine Premier League fixtures.

However, the return to fitness of Anthony Martial means he has started just one of the last seven in the league.

“I’m a guy who likes to play football. When your appearances are reduced, as has been the case lately, you realise what you are missing,” he said. “If the club wants to keep me, I’ll have to know what role they have in mind for me.”

Harry Kane is reportedly Ten Hag’s “absolute priority” when it comes to transfer business from Manchester United in the summer window. The former Ajax manager has expressed the need for the club to sign a striker in the summer.

“Every day you have to get better so if there are opportunities to get better then you have to strike, that’s my approach,” he said. “I’m looking, doing research, I have an idea and have profiles to strengthen the squad.”

Then, in early April the United manager explained: “What you want is to have two players who can score more than 12 or 15 goals a season.”

Then, before United’s 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest, he again outlined his criteria for any prospective striker: “For a striker, the main thing is to score goals by any method, that is so far ahead of anything else. We need a striker who scores goals because we have ability in the team to put balls in the box.

“We have to build a new future, and we need a striker who not only scores goals but contributes by linking up play very well and pressing, which is very important.”
