Justine Madugu recall heavy hitters as Super Falcons squad for Cameroon double-header unveiled

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have named a 25-woman squad for a two-match friendly series against Cameroon in Yaounde, with the return of forward Monday Gift and midfield architect Ngozi Okobi-Okeoghene, headlining a selection that signals coach Justine Madugu's serious intent to defend the continental crown at WAFCON 2026 in Morocco.

The fixtures, scheduled for Saturday, February 28 and Tuesday, March 3 at the Cameroonian capital, fall within the FIFA Women's International Window and represent the final major dress rehearsal before the Falcons travel to Morocco for the 13th Women Africa Cup of Nations, running from March 17 to April 3. For a squad chasing history on two fronts simultaneously, the timing could not be more pointed.

Monday Gift returns

Every squad announcement has a headline, and this one has two.

Monday Gift's recall since November 2024 restores a forward whose experience at the highest level of African women's football is difficult to replicate from outside the squad.

Her return after her shocking exclusion from the WAFCON 2024 win adds a layer of physical and goal threat in the final third that younger forwards alone cannot yet provide consistently.

Alongside her, the inclusion of Ngozi Okobi-Okeoghene, who returns for the first time since 2023, gives Madugu a midfield presence built on championship pedigree, a player who understands what it costs to win at this level and has done it before in green and white.

The balance Madugu has struck in this selection is deliberate and visible. The squad carries the experience of players who have lived through WAFCON campaigns alongside the energy of a younger generation hungr, Portsmouth's Comfort Erhabor earning a maiden call alongside Fatima Oloko.

The friendly series against Cameroon matters in itself, a battle between two of the continent's most famous women's programmes is never routine. But its true significance is what it points toward.

The WAFCON in Morocco carries stakes that go beyond the continental trophy. The four semi-finalists in Morocco will earn direct qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil, meaning every match in that tournament, from the group stage onwards, is effectively a World Cup qualifier.

Nigeria, as defending champions, enter Morocco as the team everyone wants to beat. These Cameroon friendlies are the last opportunity to stress-test the squad's shape, combinations and mentality before the pressure becomes absolute.

Ten titles. A decade of continental dominance built over generations of Nigerian women who fought, often without adequate support or recognition, to make the Super Falcons the most successful female side in African football history.

The defence of that legacy in Morocco is not simply a sporting objective, it is an act of national identity. And the road to Morocco runs directly through Yaounde.
