Vihiga Queens players, a defender and an attacker, join Kenya's women's football team for Africa Women Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Football Kenya Federation Women’s Premier League champions Vihiga Queens  have proudly announced that two of their talented players have been called up to join the national team, Harambee Starlets.

Phoebe Owiti and Janet Moraa Bundi have been selected to the national team as Kenya prepares to face off against Cameroon's Indomitable Lionesses in a crucial two-legged qualification round for the 2024 Africa Women Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The matches are scheduled for September 22 and September 26, 2023, with Kenya starting the campaign with an away fixture in Cameroon followed by a home match.

The Kidudu-based side  wasted no time in congratulating their players and expressing their pride in the call-ups.

“Vihiga Queens takes this earliest opportunity to congratulate our two players Phoebe Owiti (Defender) and Janet Moraa Bundi (Attacker) for earning a call-up to the Kenya National senior women’s team Harambee Starlets ahead of their two home and away matches on September 22 and September 26, 2023, respectively, against Cameroon for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). We wish you the very best in your national duty and may you fly not only our club's but the entire country's flag higher,” read the statement.

Harambee Starlets new head coach Beldine Odemba, is putting her stamp on the team by extending a call-up to Valerie Nekesa from Madira Assassins.

While the full squad for the qualifiers is yet to be unveiled, Cameroon has already revealed a strong squad for the upcoming clashes.

The aggregate winners of the two-legged qualification round will move on to face either Gabon or Botswana in the second round of the qualifiers.

The ultimate victor of the second round will secure an automatic spot in the 2024 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations, an event that will be hosted in Morocco.

Should Harambee Starlets advance to the second round of qualifiers, fans can mark their calendars for the matches that are set to take place between November 27 and December 5.

These qualifiers mark a significant moment for Harambee Starlets as they make their return to CAF Competitions after Kenya's lengthy suspension from football by FIFA.
