Los Blancos travelled to Germany to face Union Berlin, and although they had won the group and consequently promotion, the 14-time winners kept their foot on the gas and made it six wins in six group games.

How it happened

Despite having won the group, Carlo Ancelotti named a strong Real Madrid team against Union; however, the hosts had the better of the opening exchanges.

Los Blancos soon began to assert dominance and control proceedings. They had numerous chances in the first half to punish the Berlin-based club, including from the penalty spot late in the half, an attempt that Luka Modric scoffed, losing the battle of nerves to Frederik Rannow.

Buoyed by Rannow’s save, Union Berlin went straight for Real Madrid’s neck and dealt a telling blow, as Kevin Volland capitalised on a David Alaba howler to send the Germans in front.

Union threatened to compound their lead at the start of the second half, but Real Madrid stayed resolute. Los Blancos soon began to roar, and in the 61st minute, Joselu gave them an equaliser, and 11 minutes later, the Spanish international scored to put Los Merengues in front for the first time in the game.

Alex Kral thought he earned a late point for the hosts when he equalised in the 85th minute, but Real Madrid had the last laugh as Dani Ceballos scored on the 89th minute to confirm the victory.
