Matano vows to regroup and strengthen squad after missing out on both titles.

Tusker coach Robert Matano has expressed his disappointment over a crucial defensive error that ultimately led to their 1-0 loss against Kakamega Homeboyz in the 2023 FKF Cup final.

The match played at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani on Saturday afternoon marked a bitter end to Tusker's quest for the cup after recently relinquishing their FKF Premier League title to Gor Mahia.

Matano, a seasoned tactician,  believed that the match slipped away from their grasp due to a single mistake that proved to be costly.

"All I had been telling the boys is to lock and defend throughout the match but in that instance our full-back gave a Kakamega Homeboyz attacker a space to shoot and that is what resulted to defeat" Robert Matano said.

Matano further expressed his frustration at the team's inability to claim two consecutive trophies, having recently lost the FKF Premier League title to Gor Mahia.

"It is very sad that we let two trophies slip on our hands but that is just because we did not have strong players who can sustain pressure and fight for a win," Matano added.

Looking ahead, Matano emphasized the importance of regrouping and strategizing for the upcoming season.

He acknowledged the need for changes within the team and hinted at the recruitment of new players who possess the qualities required to push the club forward.

The highly anticipated final between Tusker FC and Kakamega Homeboyz saw a tense first half that ended goalless.

Both teams showcased staunch defensive performances, determined to protect their territories and deny their opponents any scoring opportunities.

However, it was in the 73rd minute when Kevin Amwayi of Kakamega Homeboyz stole the spotlight with an exceptional display of skill.

Evading Tusker FC's defense, Amwayi seized the moment and unleashed a sensational shot, finding the back of the net and securing victory for his team.

Tusker FC's journey to the final included a dramatic last-gasp winner against Ulinzi Stars.

Prior to that, they emerged victorious against KCB in the quarterfinals and overcame Division One side Rainbow in the Round of 16.

Despite their commendable run, the Brewers were left to reflect on missed opportunities and the defensive lapse that proved costly in the title-deciding match.
