Plagued by injuries, Gerard Deulofeu has revealed the difficulty he is facing in getting back to playing football, with his last game coming in January 2023
Twelve years ago, Gerard Deulofeu was considered one of La Masia's brightest prospects. After several loan spells and a failed return to Barcelona in 2017/18, the 31-year-old Spanish winger is now living a nightmare.
On January 22, 2023, Deulofeu, now at Udinese, returned to action against Sampdoria after a month-long absence, but lasted only 13 minutes. Since then, the Spaniard has endured an ongoing ordeal due to a knee infection that has sidelined him for the past two and a half years.

What Deulofeu said
In an interview with Catalan newspaper Sport, via Abola, Deulofeu described his ordeal: "All of this is torture. Every day I train to come back, but it's impossible to say when.
I don't know if it will happen, but I'm giving everything and I don't want to give up." He even stated that "even though I think about retiring" more than an injury, he is living with a "disability."

The former La Masia prospect praised his current club, Udinese: "They have always supported me, it's important to clarify, because it seems like they left me alone, but it's not true. I have the opportunity to train at their facilities."
The extended period on the sidelines has allowed the Spanish winger to reflect on his past, highlighted by seasons alongside global football stars: "I wish Barcelona had been more patient.
It wasn't easy playing with Messi, Suárez, and Neymar. I would have given everything for an opportunity. I regret not staying, but I also take responsibility: I wanted success, but I lacked maturity."
