Former Real Madrid and PSG winger Angel Di Maria has shared an interesting perspective on the endless debate involving Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Argentine legend Angel Di María has shared a unique perspective on the Messi-Ronaldo rivalry, identifying the one specific category where the Portuguese superstar stands alone.

The rivalry has been a dominant narrative in football for over fifteen years, with both players consistently pushing each other to new heights. While Messi’s 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar is often cited as the definitive "tie-breaker," Ronaldo remains a firm favorite for many who value his unmatched athleticism and prolific scoring record.

"El Fideo" remains clear that Lionel Messi is the greatest to ever play the game, but he admitted that when it comes to professionalism and sheer work ethic, Cristiano Ronaldo has no equal.

“In terms of professionalism, Cris is definitely number one,” Di María said.

“The way he worked, how he looked after himself, and how he always tried to be the best while competing with Leo was truly admirable.”

Di María, who played with Ronaldo for four seasons at Real Madrid and alongside Messi for nearly two decades with Argentina, used a stark comparison to illustrate the difference between hard work and divine talent.

“Cris was all about work and effort to be number one, but Messi, drinking mate in the locker room, later showed that he had a gift from God to be the best.”

Despite his praise for Ronaldo’s unmatched discipline, Di María suggested that the Al-Nassr captain was simply a victim of bad timing.

For the 37-year-old, no amount of training could bridge the gap created by Messi’s natural genius.“Unfortunately for him, he was born in the wrong generation,” Di María added.

“There was another chosen one. The reality is in the numbers—one has eight Ballons d’Or, the other has five. Then there is the World Cup, which makes a huge difference.”
