Sesko vs Gyokeres: Former Super Eagles player picks better Premier League striker

A former Premier League and Super Eagles star has weighed on the debate pitting Viktor Gyokeres against Benjamin Sesko.

Yakubu Aiyegbeni has been drawn into the Benjamin Sesko vs Viktor Gyokeres debate, as the former Everton man picked the Arsenal striker as the better fit for the Premier League.

What Yakubu said

Šeško and Gyokeres were two of the striker talents added to the Premier League pool last summer. Given the high-profile nature of the transfers, the clubs they signed for, and their struggles this season, comparisons abound.

Yakubu, a seasoned Premier League striker in his own right, with 97 goals in the division, was asked about both players, and he argued that Gyokeres was more equipped to cope with the demands of the English top flight.

“I think he’s more physical than [Benjamin Sesko] at Manchester United. He’ll run the channels,” Yakubu said, per Sportscast. “He is quick. You can see he needs time. It’s different when you play in Portugal.

“The Premier League is one of the toughest leagues in the world, but I believe he is really, really solid. He’s a raw striker. He uses his body, and he is unlucky he got injured now, but I think Arsenal have got a striker there in that boy. He is looking good.”

Sesko vs Gyokeres

Šeško completed a big-money move to Manchester United last summer, joining from RB Leipzig on a five-year deal for £66.3m, plus around £6–7m in add-ons.

The 22-year-old has struggled to reproduce his best form in the Premier League so far, managing only 2 goals and 1 assist in 11 appearances (618 minutes played).

Gyökeres, on the other hand, arrived in the Premier League with higher immediate expectations, given his age (27) and track record (he won the Gerd Müller trophy).

Arsenal were linked to both Sesko and Gyokeres but opted to sign the Swede. They agreed to a deal in the region of £55m to sign him from Sporting CP.

However, he has also found the Premier League a tough prospect. In 11 league appearances, he has 4 goals and has endured spells out of the side and criticism over hold-up play and adaptation to Arsenal’s tactical demands.
