The Gor Mahia rising star dons jersey number 88 with a heartfelt story behind it adding depth to his on-field brilliance.

Gor Mahia right-back Rooney Onyango has been making waves in Kenyan football as one of its most promising young talents.

The 22-year-old, who joined the club in June this year, has been dazzling fans with his performances in the famous Green and White colors of K'Ogalo.

While Onyango's skills on the field have captured the attention of many it is his choice of jersey number 88 that has left fans curious.

Onyango has now revealed the deeply personal reason behind his jersey number selection.

"We share the same birthday as my father, which is August 8th. When you combine the digits, it's 88," said Onyango.

Onyango's journey from his former club Wazito FC, where he wore the same jersey number, to Gor Mahia has been marked by outstanding performances and a relentless work ethic.

The youngster's talent and dedication have not gone unnoticed, earning him a call-up to the national team this season for matches against Russia and Gabon.

In the match against Gabon, his second appearance in Harambee Stars colors, Onyango demonstrated his prowess with pinpoint crosses in the first half posing a constant threat to the opposition.

Despite his excellent delivery, luck was not on his side as none of his teammates managed to capitalize on his crosses.

One notable moment in the game was when Onyango delivered a perfect ball to Masud Juma, the Al-Jabalain striker, who headed the ball towards the goal.

This season, Onyango has been a fixture in the Gor Mahia lineup, starting nearly all the matches and consistently completing the full 90 minutes.
