Amid interest from Real Madrid, a Premier League club have reportedly begun discussions with a key player over a new contract, keen to ensure said player does not join Los Blancos on a free transfer.

Arsenal have reportedly started negotiations with William Saliba regarding a new contract, aiming to secure the long-term future of the highly-rated centre-back.

Real Madrid are reportedly keen on the French international, whose current deal runs until 2027.

It was previously reported that Los Blancos were keen to sign the defender on a free transfer, a strategy that has seen the Spanish giants secure top talents across Europe, most notably Kylian Mbappe and probably Trent Alexander-Arnold.

While other clubs may also be interested, it is believed that Saliba's most likely destination, should he leave the Emirates, would be the Spanish giants.

However, The Athletic are reporting that the Premier League giants are determined to retain the 24-year-old and sporting director Andrea Berta has initiated talks with the defender’s representatives to explore an extension.

Although no formal offer has been made yet, Arsenal are expected to present one as discussions progress.

Saliba is understood to be content in North London but will likely seek a contract that reflects his standing as one of Europe's top defenders in his age group.

The defender previously stated that contract talks had not started but expressed his happiness at Arsenal and his desire to win trophies with the club.

Saliba signed his current extension in 2023, alongside Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.
