Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana could be given another chance at Manchester United after the Red Devils' top target reportedly snubbed them

Manchester United’s search for a new goalkeeper may be in jeopardy, as reports suggest World Cup-winning shot-stopper Emiliano Martinez has snubbed Old Trafford in favour of a move to Spain.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper is said to have his heart set on reuniting with compatriot Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid, effectively ruling out a Premier League switch.

Martinez leans towards Atletico amid Man United interest

Football Insider reports that the Argentine goalkeeper has informed friends of his desire to join Atletico Madrid, despite both Atletico and Manchester United registering firm interest in recent weeks.

With Manchester United exploring options to replace or at least challenge Andre Onana, Martinez had emerged as a top candidate. However, his preference to move to La Liga appears to have tipped the scales in Atletico’s favour.

Martinez, who won the FIFA World Cup with Argentina in 2022, sees the chance to work under fellow Argentine Diego Simeone as the ideal next step in his career.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa, who are under pressure to avoid breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules, remain open to a sale, but United's reluctance to move quickly may have cost them a deal. Adding to the hesitation is Martinez’s age and high asking price, which reportedly exceeds £40 million.

Onana set to stay despite mixed form

With Martinez no longer a frontrunner and no exit yet agreed for Andre Onana, it appears the Cameroonian international will remain first choice at Old Trafford, at least for the start of the new season.

Onana’s first two seasons at Manchester United underwhelmed fans, with notable blunders both in the Premier League and European competition, prompting calls for change.

However, with INEOS opting for financial prudence and Martinez’s departure off the table, United may instead explore cheaper alternatives, or back Onana to bounce back.
