Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro spoke about injured players and the reason for their draw against Zimbabwe.

Nigeria have had to play their last World Cup qualifier clashes without Napoli ace Victor Osimhen, and the Super Eagles boss Jose Peseiro admits to missing last season’s Capocannoniere.

The West Africans have had a poor start to their qualifying campaign, failing to win in two games as they only managed to draw against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

What Peseiro said

The latest of the disappointing results is the 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in Rwanda and following the match, Peseiro was unavoidably asked how much he missed Osimhen, who scored 10 goals to put Nigeria on a bus to Ivory Coast for the AFCON.

The 24-year-old is currently injured and has been out of action since mid-October due to a hamstring injury. He is currently a big miss for club and country. Peseiro, however, pointed out that Osimhen was not the only key player missing through injury, and lack of energy was what led to the poor performance, not player unavailability.

“Of course,” Peseiro answered when asked if he missed Osimhen.“With Ndidi, with Osimhen, with Zaidu, Taiwo, and many other players, but I think we have enough players; sometimes injuries happen.

“Samuel Chukwueze as well; they could not come, but I think we have the team to beat Zimbabwe. I think the key point was lack of energy.”

Meanwhile, Nigeria came agonisingly close to scoring due to an indirect freekick, which was heavily contested when it was awarded. We examined if it was warranted.
