Tosin Adarabioyo has reflected on Chelsea's win over Esperance, his contribution to the result and the Blues' next Club World Cup opponent.
Tosin Adarabioyo has expressed his delight after scoring a towering header that helped Chelsea secure a victory over Esperance in the Club World Cup, propelling them into the last-16.
The centre-back opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time before further goals from new signing Liam Delap and youngster Tyrique George sealed a 3-0 success.
Adarabioyo, eligible to represent Nigeria’s Super Eagles and spoke of the possibility of opting for the three-time African champions over England, has lauded his impact in the attacking areas this season.
What Adarabioyo said about fifth Chelsea goal
Adarabioyo’s goal against Esperance marked his fifth of the season, a return he is pleased with as he aims to contribute offensively from defence.
“I was happy to score my first goal for a while,” said Adarabioyo.
“That’s five goals for the season now which isn’t a bad return. I definitely work on contributing offensively. You look at the best centre-halves in the world and they make a difference in both boxes”
Chelsea's victory secured second place in Group D, and Enzo Maresca’s men now face Group C winners Benfica in Charlotte on Saturday.
Adarabioyo stressed the upcoming match will be tough, urging the team to focus on recovery and preparation for the challenge.
“They are a good side, they deserved to go through,” stressed the centre-back.
“We know it’s going to be a really tough game so we will get ready for that now. We have to recover, switch our focus to Benfica, and we look forward to that game.”
What’s next for Chelsea?
Maresca’s side will face Benfica in the competition’s last 16, seeking a place in the quarter-finals, where they could face Palmeiras or Botafogo.
