The tie was a rescheduled NNL week 5 fixture which had been abruptly halted on Sunday after fans of Smart City encroached the field to attack matchday officials.

Gateway United's head coach Toyin Ayinla has reacted happily to his side's 1-0 victory over fellow Nigeria National League (NNL) side Smart City.

The game completed on Thursday, was a rescheduled week 5 fixture of the 2023 season, which had been abruptly halted on Sunday after fans of Smart City encroached onto the field to attack matchday officials for the issuance of a red card.

NNL demand Gateway United vs Smart City be completed

Following Sunday's unpleasant incident at the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun, which led to the abandonment of the match in the 44th minute, the NNL governing board had issued a ruling that the game was to be completed on Thursday.

Both teams then returned to the stadium on Thursday, with a dominant second-half performance ensuring that Gateway United returned to winning ways.

A converted 58th-minute penalty by Ameh Agada following a foul on Olajide Mustapha, was all the Ogun club needed to take their points haul to 7 in Group B2 of the NNL Southern Conference.

Gateway United will not relent, Ayinla says

Speaking on the victory, Gateway United's coach Ayinla stated that they can no longer relent, as they are closer to securing a spot in the NNL Super 8 playoff.

"What a game," Ayinla said. "We gave it our best shot. We will not relent. The first stanza has ended and the short break affords us the opportunity to bolster our squad. We will henceforth step up our preparations."

Gateway United will now turn their attention to the Federation Cup where they will play Kwara United in the Round of 64, on Wednesday, April 26.
