Nigerians will go to the polls on February 25 to vote for the country's new president.
The 2023 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season will, after Week 9 matches this weekend, embark on a three-week break as Nigeria approaches its most important period in 2023.
The nation's general elections for 2023 are slated for Saturday, February 25, for voting for the president and national assembly members, and Saturday, March 11, for voting for governors and state house of assemblies representatives.
The break will enable the clubs to refresh and enable players and officials to participate in the nationwide exercise.
IMC confirms NPFL's mid-season break
According to Davidson Owumi, head of operations of the Interim Management Committee (IMC), as gathered by Complete Sports, reports about the league taking a break were legitimate.

“Yes, I can confirm that the NPFL will go on break for three weeks after the match day nine games. We’ll resume after the Nigerian elections for the final stage of the abridged league,” Owumi revealed, according to Complete Sports.
“We are putting every effort to ensure that the league drives itself. It’s been hectic, but I think we have done well and if we get more sponsors and partners, the clubs and other stakeholders will benefit from it and the league will progress to the level we envisage.
“The IMC is discussing with DStv to return NPFL on cable TV, Supersport channels. I can confirm to you that we are making progress and very soon Nigerians and the world will be able to view more matches and attract more interest in the league,” he added.
Regular season to end May 14
As at week 8, Bendel Insurance and Lobi Stars lead the teams in Groups A and B, with Bendel Insurance sitting at top of their group with 20 points, and Lobi Stars, with 16 points in Group B.

The league champion for the 2023 season, which is being played in an abridged format, will be determined in a Super 6 playoff in which the top three teams from each group will compete.
The regular season is scheduled to be rounded up by May 14.
