Christian Eriksen out for an extended period
Manchester United have been rocked by the news that Christian Eriksen will not return to action until at least the end of April after being ruled out with an ankle injury.
Eriksen injured against Reading after Carroll tackle
Eriksen was taken off in Manchester United's 3-1 FA Cup win over Reading after suffering a horrific tackle from striker Andy Carroll, and the club has now announced that the midfielder will not be expected back on the pitch until much later.
They announced via a club statement that the Danish midfielder will be out for “an extended period” after “initial assessments indicate[d] that Eriksen is likely to be out until late April or early May,"
The club’s statement said, “Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen is expected to be out of action for an extended period because of an ankle injury sustained in our Emirates FA Cup victory over Reading on Saturday.
“Our Danish midfielder was withdrawn in the second half of the 3-1 win after being caught by a tackle from Reading striker Andy Carroll, who was later sent off for two bookable offences.”
Eriksen crucial to Manchester United’s success
Manchester United, however, believe that Eriksen can still play some part in the season when he returns.
"While investigations are continuing, initial assessments indicate that Eriksen is likely to be out until late April or early May,” they added in their statement.
Eriksen has been a standout player for Manchester United since joining on a free transfer in the summer.
He has helped stabilize the midfield and provided an upgrade to McTominay and Fred, and he will be missed during his injury spell.
He has already played in 31 games for the Red Devils and has contributed to 11 goals with two goals and nine assists for Manchester United.
