Lucas Paqueta, a midfielder for West Ham, is currently under investigation by the English FA after violating betting regulations.

The Brazilian is the latest Premier League star to be probed for breaching the FA betting rules.

The West Ham player was close to joining Manchester City, but the transfer was called off because of recent claims of a betting violation.

Following the recent allegation of a betting breach levelled against Lucas Paqueta, we take a look at three reasons why the England FA is investigating the issue.

1. Betting on receiving a yellow card

According to reports from Daily Mail, Paqueta placed a bet on himself to receive a yellow card in games against Leeds, Aston Villa and Bournemouth.

Paqueta's yellow card against Bournemouth has drawn more attention and is now being investigated by integrity authorities, and attorneys over the coming days and weeks.

The 25-year-old had already committed a foul in the last seconds of a game before vehemently objecting and receiving a yellow card.

2. Bet account traced to Paqueta-owned Island

The Bournemouth bets were linked to accounts registered in Paqueta Island, off Rio de Janeiro, just like with the suspicious activity from the previous season.

According to Daily Mail, the accounts in issue have been connected to people who are well-known to be Paqueta's friends.

Despite the fact that enquiries had been ongoing for over five months before the Bournemouth game, Paqueta was unaware he was under investigation.

The Brazilian is said to own an Island in Brazil where most of the betting accounts were used to bet on him.

3. Betting allegations from Brazil bookies

Several bookies in Brazil received an unusually high volume of bets on the Brazilian international to be booked against Villa in March.

This caused an alert from their integrity monitoring systems which led to how the initial investigation started.

According to Daily Mail, it is assumed that anti-corruption officials then reviewed earlier games to trace the betting trend.

It is said that Paqueta has asserted he had no knowledge of the unusual bets and is certain he would not be held accountable.

The club requested that a formal interview with Paqueta that was due to take place on Monday be postponed in order to allow them more time to prepare, as Mail Sport reported on Tuesday.
