With many of their star players resting ahead of the Manchester United match this weekend, Liverpool were beaten by Union Saint-Gilloise in their final Europa League match

Premier League giants Liverpool lost their second UEFA Europa League match of the season after going down 2-1 against Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in their final group.

Liverpool fall to surprise defeat

With their eyes firmly set on the crucial Premier League match against fierce rivals Manchester United this weekend, Liverpool fielded a weakened squad against Saint-Gilloise and paid the price.

The Reds fell to defeat in Belgium after goals from Mohamed El Amine Amoura and Cameron Puertas helped the home side to an impressive victory over their famous opponents.

Liverpool got one goal through fledgling star Jarell Quansah, who scored an equaliser after 39 minutes, but the goal was not enough to stave off defeat as USG took the lead only four minutes later.

Liverpool top Europa League group despite defeat

Despite the defeat, Liverpool finished the group stage at the top of their section and automatically progressed to the round of 16, bypassing the tricky playoff round against teams dropping from the Champions League.

The Reds had already claimed 12 points before the match against USG, creating an unassailable lead from the chasing pack, hence the use of a largely second-string squad to execute the match.

USG, on the other hand, crash out of the Europa League despite the win over Liverpool, but will now play the knockout rounds of the UEFA Europa Conference League after finishing third in the group.
