Premier League giants Liverpool have focused on a new defensive-midfield target after been rejected by Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

Liverpool have reportedly set their sights on a new target in their chase for a defensive midfielder, with Crystal Palace's Cheick Doucoure hot on their radar.

The 23-year-old Malian only joined the Eagles last summer from Lens for a reported €22.60 million fee and is on a contract until 2027. But he could be set for an exit, with the Reds gearing up to make a move for him.

Liverpool's summer disappointment

Following the exit of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson to the Saudi Professional League, Jurgen Klopp's side were pressed with the necessity of signing a player in the pivot position.

They entered talks with Southampton for Romeo Lavia but failed to reach an agreement before pivoting away to focus on Brighton's Moises Caicedo.

They reached an agreement for the Ecuadorian; however, the former Independientes del Valle midfielder rejected their proposal, preferring to join Chelsea.

Liverpool returned for Lavia, but the Belgian, like Caicedo, reportedly prefers a move to Stamford Bridge over a transfer North of the country.

Liverpool enter for Doucoure

According to the Independent, Liverpool are stepping up their efforts to land the Mali international.

With his contract still a long way from expiring, Liverpool will be expected to shell out just under £60 million to prise him away from Selhurst Park.

The player is also said to be keen on the move. Liverpool also have Fulham's Joao Palinha and Nice's Kephren Thuram as options for the role.
