Liverpool coach Arne Slot discussed Ibrahima Konate's contract situation.
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has provided an update on Ibrahima Konate’s contract situation, explaining that the Reds were keen on landing him amid renewed interest from Real Madrid.
The 26-year-old is in the final year of his contract and has previously stalled on negotiating amid interest from Los Blancos, who wanted him as a free agent.
What Slot said
The Dutch tactician was asked about Konate’s situation recently, and he shared that negotiations were advancing. While it seemed that the France international was unresponsive during negotiations with a Real Madrid move in sight, Los Blancos' decision to pull out in November changed the dynamics.
“We are in talks with him, so that tells you what we want. It’s clear we would like him to stay, but negotiations are ongoing, so let’s see where that ends,” Slot said. “We wouldn’t be in negotiations if we didn’t want him to stay.
“Ibou has had a very good spell recently. He had a lot of good games earlier in the season, but then he was also part of the reason why we conceded a goal. His general performances were good, but then a small mistake he made immediately led to a goal, and so he was judged differently.
“But he is having a very good partnership with Virgil since I’ve been here, and, just like Virgil, he has always been fit. Touch wood. These two are vital for us, not only because of the quality they have but because of the lack of options we have behind."
Real Madrid return for Konate
As Pulse Sports reported, Los Blancos have returned for Konate after initially informing Liverpool that they were no longer interested. The LALIGA giants are said to have contacted Konate’s representatives and are considering a move in the summer. This could prove a stumbling block in Liverpool’s contract renewal negotiations.
