Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United: Onana shines as 10-man Red Devils earn surprise draw

Manchester United defied the odds to avoid defeat away at Liverpool despite being reduced to 10 men late on.

Liverpool couldn't find a way past Manchester United in what was a frenetic Premier League clash which ended goalless at Anfield on Sunday evening.

Erik Ten Hag's men came in with very little chance of getting a result having been written off due to their bad form and Liverpool's title-contending run of results so far.

But Manchester United proved resilient defensively and even created chances to almost win the game but were ultimately wasteful in front of goal.

The result see Liverpool drop to second on the Premier League table, a point behind Arsenal and tied with Aston Villa in what is so far an intriguing title race.

Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United

Anfield looked even more packed than usual for this gigantic clash between England's most successful team but it was Liverpool who started on the front foot with an early flurry of attacks and set pieces which ultimately yielded nothing mostly thanks to Andre Onana's exploits.

The first half was in truth a bore-fest, controlled entirely by Liverpool as Manchester United only managed one touch in the opposing box but the game remained goalless at half time.

The game got much better in the second half though as both teams played with a lot more intensity and Trent Alexander-Arnold asserted himself on both ends of the pitch with multiple close efforts on goal while also getting back impressively to deny Alejandro Garnacho on a Manchester United counter-attack.

United did create more chances especially on the break, best of which fell to Rasmus Hojlund but the Danish striker fired straight at Alison from point-blank range.

Both sides created more chances but could not convert and then Manchester United were reduced to 10 men when Diogo Dalot received two cautions within seconds of each other, both for dissent.

The game ended shortly after with the spoils shared, a positive result for Manchester United who remain winless in their last nine visits to Anfield and still haven't scored there since 2018.
