FKF Premier League matchweek 29 preview

AFC Leopards will face title-hungry Nzoia Sugar at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday hoping to put an end to their underwhelming run of no wins in their last five league matches.

They will be playing for the first time with their fans allowed back in the stadium after the end of the stadium ban imposed on them from attending matches for disrupting their match against Kakamega Homeboyz three weeks ago.

After beating Bandari last Sunday 3-0 in the FKF Cup quarter-finals, fans would have been forgiven for thinking the club had finally turned the corner, only to be shocked 1-0 by Ulinzi Stars just three days later.

Patrick Aussems will be hoping his charges can establish some consistency, especially in the final third and will be hoping wide players like Peter Thiong’o, Victor Omune and Jaffari Owiti pace will pin back Nzoia and prevent them from finding the Millers’ dangerman, John Macharia, who is on a hot streak of 15 league goals for the season.

Leopards have the third best defence in the league, with custodian Levis Opiyo on 14 league clean sheets.

Salim Babu’s Nzoia Sugar will be hoping to get a sixth straight league win to keep the pressure on Tusker and Gor Mahia. They are just 5 points behind Gor Mahia.

They are fourth in the league for the goalscoring charts on 38 and the joint-second best defense in the league, having conceded just 17 goals, while keeper Humphrey Katasi is on 15 clean sheets. Expect a tight encounter.

At the Ruaraka grounds, Tusker FC will be looking to get back to winning ways with a win over free-scoring Kakamega Homeboyz, who are full of confidence, scoring 14 in their last 6 games.

They famously whitewashed Kariobangi Sharks 6-1 last Sunday in the cup, but will be facing a resolute Tusker, who are experts at absorbing pressure and then hitting teams on the break.

Tusker have relied on different sources of players for goals while strikers Deogracious Ojok, David Majak and Ibrahim Joshua have been out, but Ojok is back to full fitness and has started each of their last two games.

Captain Humphrey Mieno continues to earn plaudits for his presence, ability to dictate games, composure and leadership qualities, which have helped Tusker get within touching distance of Gor Mahia. He, however, picked up a knock during their 0-0 midweek draw with Tusker but carried on and should be available.

In Muhoroni, Gor Mahia will face a daunting challenge when they play Wazito at the Muhoroni grounds.

Wazito have picked up form at the right time, inspired by custodian Tom Muthomi in goal, who has been instrumental in their recent good form, winning two of their last four league games as they attempt a famous battle away from the relegation places.

Gor Mahia are unbeaten in each of their last 11 league games, and have been marshaled by the unstoppable goalscoring form of Benson Omala.

Omala has hit 25 goals, just one short of equalling Boniface Ambani’s record of 26 goals in a single league season. With Wazito boss Charles Odera having put his faith in Muthomi, he will pray his heroics will deny Omala for the second game in a row after he failed to find the net in their 2-1 win over Mathare United.

Jonathan McKinstry will be hoping his charges can take full advantage and maintain their four-point gap over Tusker.
