Omondi limped off in the 14th minute after sustaining a fracture and ligament injury on his left leg during Kenya’s 2-2 draw with Russia last week.

KCB FC head coach Bernard Mwalala says the team will offer its full support to Bryne Omondi while he steps up his recovery from an unfortunate left leg fracture and ligament tear he suffered during Harambee Stars’ 2-2 draw with Russia.

Omondi limped off in the 14th minute after sustaining the injury as he attempted to make a save in vain as Russia’s Alexander Sobolev scored the opening goal in the eighth minute after capitalising on a wayward pass by Johnstone Omurwa.

Pulse Sports reported last week that Omondi would be out for a sustained period of time as he is expected to undergo corrective surgery after going through a scan last week.

Mwalala however insists that his backup goalkeepers led by captain Gabriel Andika will step up and hold fort while Omondi recovers, and says that the whole team is supporting him every step of the way.

“The most important thing we did was that we registered three goalkeepers of almost equal ability,” Mwalala said. “As a coach and as a team, we want to say sorry to him for his injury,” he added.

“We wish him a speedy recovery. He is a young man who was heading for big things in his life and also in his career. It is a setback.

“However, we have told him to keep grinding away and we have let him know that we will be with him. It happens all  the time in your life as a player.

“We have to ensure that he will be sat down, undergo rehabilitation and we are really praying for him.”

"We know that we will not be with Bryne for a period of at least three months. The whole first leg. We have however prepared ourselves for a scenario where he will not be with us for three months.”

Omondi had risen to prominence as Harambee Stars’ first-choice goalkeeper after making his debut against Pakistan back in June.

His assured displays in goal had won over Engin Firat, who has made it clear he is his first choice heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers that commence in June with Kenya set to play Gabon and Seychelles away.

Omondi’s command of area, distribution and composure in goal is second to none in the country, as well as his shot-stopping and ability to communicate well with his defenders.

Harambee Stars will be hoping he is fit in time for the March games next year.
