The Harambee Stars defender will be keen to show Wekundu wa Msimbazi what they are missing as Singida face Simba in a Ngao Ya Jamii clash tonight.

Harambee Stars defender Joash Onyango will face his former side Simba SC on Thursday night, one month since ditching them for Singida Fountain Gate FC.

Simba and Singida will clash in the second match of the Tanzania Community Shield, fondly known as Ngao Ya Jamii, with the winner set to take on champions Yanga in the final on August 13 after Timu ya Wananchi beat Azam FC 2-0 on Wednesday.

Onyango, alongside Kenyan compatriot Duke Abuya, were in danger of missing Thursday’s clash having not been cleared by the Tanzanian Football Federation (TFF) but the club has now received the green light.

“Simba and Singida have submitted their licenses for their foreign players who will play in the Community Shield in Tanga. The 10 licenses submitted for Singida’s foreign players are as follows: Nichola Gyan, Bruno Barboso, Chukwu Ogochukwu, Bright Adjei, Nico Wadada, Medie Kagere, Enock Atta, Duke Abuya, Joash Onyango and Marouf Tchakei,” said TFF via a statement.

It has now emerged that what was holding the clearance was a requirement that all foreign players secure a work permit before they are allowed to turn out for their respective clubs and by Wednesday evening, only Azam had complied.

“The reason is that all foreign players here need to have a work permit and it costs $1,750 (Ksh251,300) per player. They need to have this renewed every year. The limit of foreign players in our league is 12 so when you combine, it goes to $21,000 (Ksh3 million),” a source privy to the goings-on told Pulse Sports.

“All that money goes to the department of immigration. Without those payments, no foreign player can be allowed to play whether the transfer window is open or not.”

Of Singida’s foreign players, Onyango will be under huge scrutiny on Thursday as he takes on Simba who he left after three years in July.

Onyango had a great first two campaigns at the club before the club supporters turned against him last season and he will be keen to show them what they are missing during the clash set to take place at the CCM Mkwakwani Stadium in Tanga
