Canizares has slammed Ter Stegen's bench antics

Legendary Spanish goalkeeper Santiago Canizares has ignited a debate surrounding Barcelona's current goalkeeping situation, suggesting that Marc-Andre ter Stegen's presence on the bench is negatively impacting first-choice keeper Wojciech Szczesny.

With Ter Stegen recently returning to full fitness after a lengthy injury layoff, the question of who should be Barcelona's number one has become a hot topic. While Szczesny has been the consistent presence between the posts during Ter Stegen's absence, coach Hansi Flick has confirmed the Polish international will start in the crucial Champions League semi-final against Inter Milan and would likely continue in the final should Barcelona progress.

However, Canizares, speaking after Barcelona's hard-fought Copa del Rey final victory over Real Madrid, where Szczesny started, voiced strong criticism of the dynamic between Ter Stegen and Flick.

"It's impossible for the pressure Ter Stegen puts on Flick not to affect Szczesny," Canizares stated, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.

He elaborated on his observations from the Copa final, claiming to have witnessed interactions that he deemed inappropriate.

"I want to talk about goalkeepers. Courtois miscalculated, thinking he was going to get in the 2-2 with Ferran, and regarding Szczesny, the pressure Ter Stegen exerts on Flick from the bench is impressive, whispering things in his ear and constantly talking," the former Valencia shot-stopper explained.

Canizares didn't shy away from labeling Ter Stegen's alleged behaviour as detrimental to the team environment.

"Call it what you want, messing around,' maybe, but that kind of behaviour, whispering things in his ear and constantly talking, puts pressure on Szczesny. It's not right,” he added.

Ter Stegen sustained a rupture to the patella tendon in his right knee back in September, leading to a prolonged period on the sidelines. Initial assessments suggested he might miss the remainder of the season, but the German international has made a quicker-than-expected recovery, returning to full training in late March and even being named in the squad for the Copa del Rey final.
