Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro who was in charge of Nigeria's senior team was asked to name the best Super Eagles game he managed

Former Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has revealed the best match he managed during his spell as Nigeria’s gaffer.

The 63-year-old Portuguese was in charge of the Super Eagles of Nigeria for 22 games, during a two-year reign on the touchline.

Peseiro won 11, drew four, and lost seven in his 22 matches in charge of the Super Eagles, earning a win percentage of 50.

One of the highlights of Jose Peseiro’s career is leading the Super Eagles to a first AFCON final since 2013 - howbeit, Nigeria ended up losing to host Ivory Coast in the final.

Peseiro names his best moment as Super Eagles coach

During an exclusive interview with Sport Italia, Peseiro stated that Nigeria’s semi-final win over South Africa at AFCON 2023 remains his best game in charge of the Super Eagles.

Captain Troost-Ekong had put Nigeria ahead from the penalty spot, but there was a late twist to the game when Victor Osimhen thought he had put Nigeria 2-0 up, but the VAR overturned the goal and awarded South Africa a penalty in the 90th minute.

Midfielder Teboho Mokhoena stepped up and sent Nwabali the wrong way to draw South Africa level. After a further 30 minutes of extra-time, with nothing to separate both sides, the game went to penalties.

Nigeria’s goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was the hero, saving three penalties, with Kelechi Iheanacho scoring the decisive kick to send Nigeria to the final.

Speaking about the game, Peseiro who has now quit his role as Super Eagles boss said,

“It was the most exciting yes, because it allowed us to play in the AFCON final, but we had a lot of really good moments during our time with the Super Eagles.”

Who will be the next Super Eagles coach?

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) recently put out an advert to fill the vacancy left by Jose Peseiro.

Many names of ex-internationals like Samson Siasia, Sunday Oliseh, and Finidi George have all been tipped as possible replacement for Peseiro.

However, the NFF has named Finidi George as interim coach when Nigeria face the Black Stars of Ghana and the Eagles of Mali in an international friendly later this month.
