What Rooney said

Mbeumo scored the opener in Manchester United's famous win over eternal rivals Liverpool on Sunday, continuing his impressive form for his new club.

The former Everton man, speaking on his new show, The Wayne Rooney Podcast, determined that Mbuemo has been the Red Devils’ best player this season before admitting that he did not believe in his signing initially.

"For me he has been Manchester United's standout player this season and he hasn't got his rewards for his hard work and the sacrifices he's made for the team throughout the season," he said, per Goal.

“I thought it was a great goal [against Liverpool], and I'll be honest, I was a bit sceptical when Manchester United signed him; I didn't know if he had the ability to come and play for Manchester United, but he's proved me wrong.

"I think he's been a great addition to the team and by far United's best player of the season. That's such a huge win for the manager. I've been one of them; I've questioned decisions, tactics, players' desire over this season and last season, and that win is massive. To win at Anfield – that's not easy to do."

Mbeumo at Manchester United

Mbeumo joined Manchester United from Brentford in the summer on a long-term deal for a reported £65m plus £6m in add-ons, signing until 2030 with an option for an extra year, making him one of the most expensive African footballers of all time.

He has settled in quickly, making eight appearances in the Premier League for United so far and contributing two goals, the most recent being the opener at Anfield.
