Cleophas Shimanyula intends to make a statement next season that it is possible to do well in African competitions with local talent

Kakamega Homeboyz chairman Cleophas Shimanyula has aimed at a dig at Tanzania’s giant clubs Simba and Yanga for  always 'relying on foreign players' to do well in African competitions, further adding that his club will do well at the continental stage by using local talent.

Homeboyz qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup for the first time in their history after beating Tusker to lift their first ever trophy, the FKF Cup, last weekend.

The club are now preparing by building a team that will be good enough to compete at that stage next season, but Shimanyula has insisted that they will focus on recruiting talented local footballers to help them in their quest for continental glory.

“We will use our local players from those reserve areas where there is  talent,” he said, “I do not want my club to be like those Tanzanian clubs that relied on foreigners,” he added.

Quizzed about whether the club would recruit experienced but talented players next season, Shimanyula insisted that they will primarily recruit young, but only sign experienced players that are “worth it”.

“We are not planning on signing players who are above 25 years old. We will look for teenage prodigys. If we can get players who are 25 years old but with experience, they have to be worth it. we can get them from clubs like Tusker, Nzoia Sugar or even the National Super League so we can grow our talent," he added.

“I am not a coach, but I have sat down with the coach and the transfer committee and we have discussed our transfer plans. We will beef up our striking department and the goalkeeping department, which is shaky.

“We are not saying the players we have are bad. We are just going to bring in players who can help them so that we can make people know we can go far in Africa by relying on locals.”

Homeboyz finished ninth in the FKF Premier League last season, a drop from the second place they achieved in the voided 2021/22 campaign, when they lost the title on goal difference.
