The former Gor Mahia players have received a lift after the Cabinet Secretary offered to support one of their main initiatives

A section of Gor Mahia legends have received a Ksh1 million cash boost from ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo to help them undertake income-generating projects.

The former Gor players who include Austin ‘Makamu’ Oduor, John ‘Bobby’ Ogolla, Nahashon Oluoch ‘Lule’, David Ochieng ‘Kamoga’, Tobias Ocholla ‘Jua Kali’, Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno, Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omolo, Micke Otieno, Nick Okoth Akura, Maurice ‘Ole Tunda’ Ouma, Josiah ‘Biggy’ Ougo, Swaleh Ochieng ‘Oswayo’, Victor Onyango, Julius ‘Awilo’ Owino, Tobias Mahira, Mike Kisagi, Peter Gor and Peter Mwololo hope to draw from the welfare sustainability fund.

Led by Oduor, the welfare group is aimed at helping the legends start a number of income-generating projects for self-sustainability to avoid cases of going around with begging bowls as it has been witnessed among a number of ex-players.

“I have today had a working session with Gor Mahia Legends Welfare Group, led by their chairman and 1987 award-winning captain, Austin ‘Makamu’ Oduor. I initiated the Gor Mahia Legends Welfare Sustainability Fund and donated Seed Capital of Ksh1 Million towards the fund,” said Owalo through a social media post.

“This effort seeks help the group undertake income-generating projects. The legends were our pride and joy in their heyday. They should not be forgotten, or neglected, in retirement.”

Cases of ex-players seeking financial assistance to help them navigate the difficulties of life after football while others battle a number of illnesses have been rife and the Gor legends feel having something of their won will go a long way in solving some of those problems.

Owalo has been one of Gor Mahia’s biggest supporters since his appointment to Cabinet last year and besides boosting the legends, he also gives donation to the 20-time Kenyan champions as way of motivating the playing unit.

The CS’s gestures have give rise to reports that he is seeking to dislodge former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as the Gor Mahia patron and only time will tell if there is more than meets the eye.
