Gor Mahia have been handed heavy punishments by FKF just a day after Sports Kenya slapped the club with a Ksh2 million bill for damages caused at Kasarani Stadium.

Gor Mahia have been slapped with further sanctions by Football Kenya Federation Leagues' and Competitions Committee following chaos witnessed after their game against Murang'a Seal on Saturday.

The 20-time FKFPL champions will have to adhere to four punishments that Kenya’s football association have imposed on them for the chaos their fans caused, as well as the damages to sections of the Kasarani Stadium.

The club will have to play their next five home matches in front of an empty stadium. Additionally, they will have to pay a Ksh500,00 fine to FKF, adding it to the close to Ksh2 million they will have to pay to Sports Kenya for the damages at Kasarani Stadium.

They will have to cater for the match official’s medical costs, while four players, Benson Omala, Rooney Onyango, Joshua Onyango and Rodgers Ouma will also face disciplinary action for attempting to attack the officials at full time.

Gor Mahia do have a right to appeal against the heavy sanctions to FKF’s appeals committee in accordance to the regulations, but there is no guarantee that the implemented sanctions will be lifted, and the sanctions shall remain active unless specified otherwise.

What was the cause of the heavy punishment Gor Mahia have received?

Ugly scenes were witnessed when a section of fans caused mayhem inside the match venue, leading to running battles with the security personnel.

Chaos initially started when an angry Gor Mahia fan stormed onto the pitch to attack the referee, claiming that the standards of officiating had been poor during the game.

Benson Omala had scored a goal that was flagged offside, but it looked controversial considering the Murang’a Seal goalkeeper parried the ball back straight at the striker, who then found the back of the net before the flag went up.

There was another incident where a Murang’a Seal player made foul towards the end of the game, but the referee appeared not to take notice.

As a result, fans vented their frustration and then started uprooting seats in the stands and throwing them onto the pitch, which prompted the police to fire teargas and rubber bullets in attempts to chase them away.

The chaos continued for an extended period of time before things eventually calmed down inside the ground but the damage was huge and visible.
