The Portuguese international discussed the Ballon d'Or race and analysed his own statistics at a time when they are crucial for such awards.

Vitinha was the chosen representative for the Portuguese national team's press conference on Wednesday, ahead of their departure for Armenia to kick off the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The midfielder was exceptional for PSG last season, leading the team to the Ligue 1 title, UEFA Champions League trophy and others.

"I'm not complaining about the numbers I've been putting up – goals, assists. I've had the opportunity to say this before, but football often gets reduced to just that, and I don't like it.

"It doesn't truly reflect the game when you compare players based solely on assists. I still want to improve, to add more, but without compromising the team," he began, as reported by Abola.

"I won't force it if I see it's not what's best for the team; it just happens naturally. It's a bit of a reflection of modern football, it is what it is. I hope to do more, but I think my numbers have been reasonable," he explained, aiming to improve them this season.

He also commented on his impressive injury-free run since his time at FC Porto. The midfielder assured that he prepares at the highest level, but acknowledged that luck and even genetics play a role.

"Let's not talk too much about that [laughs]. I don't know, sometimes it comes down to luck, genetics. Preparation also counts. It ends up being a matter of luck, with so much professionalism. Fortunately, I haven't had any issues, and I hope to keep it that way," he quipped, in good spirits.

In other news, Barcelona's young star, Lamine Yamal, has won the fourth edition of MARCA's Top 100 Footballers poll for the 2024/25 season.

The Barcelona youngster beats Ousmane Dembele, Vitinha and Kylian Mbappe, to be voted the best player in the world.
