Massimo Moratti, the former president of Inter, acknowledges he would have definitely fired Simone Inzaghi earlier this season, but also says it would have been a mistake.

The Nerazzurri defeated Benfica 2-0 in the first leg to go to the Champions League semi-final. The decisive match will be played on Wednesday night at San Siro.

Inter Milan have had a poor run in recent games which has left doubt on Filippo Inzaghi’s position as the manager at the club with the club ready to pull the string if he fails to make it to the final four.

Inter waiting on Benfica game to make final decision

Inter Milan are set to face Benfica at the San Siro for the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final which could also decide Filippo Inzaghis’s fate.

In an interview, Moratti said, “We are all waiting for the game against Benfica, which becomes more important because we’re doing so badly in Serie A.

“I think Inter have a 70 per cent chance of qualifying, seeing the first leg result, but in the Champions League anything can happen.”

Moratti well known for changing managers

In 2010, Moratti and Jose Mourinho won the Triple Crown during his lengthy reign, although he was also well-known for frequently changing managers.

When asked if he would have kept faith with Inzaghi after 11 Serie A defeats in the opening 30 rounds, he said, “No, knowing my character and the fact I used to sack coaches after three or four defeats. It probably would’ve been a mistake then too.”

“Criticism is on a par with ambition. If you start out with Ronaldo and the desire to conquer the world, then they won’t forgive failure. If you are modest instead. I see football in general now is aligning around a level of mediocrity.”
